Evaluation: Shooter

Bob Lee Swagger played by Mark Wahlberg is a retired sniper from the US military, is told that an assassination on the US president might happen and this turns out to be a setup, where the rest of the movie is about Swagger trying to figure out why he was setup and who did this to him. The movie is an incredible thriller with the usual explosions and car chases. The one thing I really appreciated in the movie was the plot was not normal with a happy ending. Even though some parts of the movie were predictable the overall plot was not predictable at all and the ending will surprise some of the viewers. That is what I enjoy in a movie, the plot has to be surprising to the viewers because if we can guess the ending then what’s the point of watching the movie. The plot in this movie was spectacular and I throughly enjoyed it. The acting is another part to evaluate when watching a movie, Mark Wahlberg did an impressive job portraying an ex-military soldier being chased, he was a perfect match to play Bob Lee Swagger in this movie. The other actors that had notable roles in this movie were Michael Peña, and Danny Glover. Michael Peña did an extraordinary job with his role playing as Nick Memphis. I easily could tell he put work into this role just like he had with the movie Crash where he did a splendid job acting. In Shooter, Michael Peña played an FBI agent who has the drive to find out why Bob Lee Swagger told him “I didn’t shoot the president.” This sparks him to go on several adventures with Swagger adding more action to the movie. Danny Glover’s acting was excellent as well, he played a great bad guy in this movie, his character develops throughout the whole movie and from the first scene to the last scene you can tell how he became a different person. The plot of the movie shows the audience how he is not what we thought of him and his character becomes a totally different person. The directing done in this film was very well done, it was not anything mind blowing, but the scenery and effects were great. The action scenes were spectacular because of the explosions and the way Mark Wahlberg acted throughout the action scenes. Overall, the movie Shooter was done well, and I was surprised at how good the movie was with plot and the acting. I was expecting a movie with a normal ending, mediocre acting, and a million explosions. The movie surpassed my expectations and it was a movie that I would definitely watch again.

  1. I too saw the movie Shooter and thought that Mark Wahlberg did a fabulous job of acting and the movie was exciting and good overall. In my opinion the only aspect of the movie that was weak was its predictability. Thus, the only thing I disagree with you about the movie is how predictable its plot is. From the very beginning I knew that they were in some sketchy mission that would end up bad for Bob Swagger and his comrade. There are just so many movies that involve some sort of top secret mission that always ends up badly for the people participating in it. Some examples are The A-Team and The Losers. Both deal with soldiers or squads on some sort of secret military operation and both begins with the mission ending up bad and set up or being betrayed by some sort of powerful person in the military. Then of course the set up makes them enemies of the state and they have to be ex-military soldiers on the run. Furthermore, they end up using there awesome military skills to outsmart the enemy and then of course they prove their innocence and take their revenge. Everybody goes home happy the end. Basically the plot of the movie Shooter has been done before and probably will be done again in the future. Furthermore, the movie is great but saying the plot is just too predictable for people who watch a lot of action movies dealing with the military.

  2. I commented on this post because I watched shooter for the first time with Karl. I liked the movie but did not love it. I thought the acting was good but not great. I thought Mark Wahlberg did a fine job acting as an US sniper retiree but the rest of the cast was okay. The main issue I had with this movie was the plot. I’ll say it first: I hate conspiracies. I am not a fan of conspiracies and do not believe they exist. I just don’t think people can keep their mouth shut enough for no one to find out. This movie is all about conspiracies and what ifs. But the issue I have is that the movie attempts to make you believe in all of these conspiracies with huge leaps that do not make much sense. From one thing to another the movie is just confusing to a point where I stopped thinking about the conspiracies and just watched for the explosions. That said, the explosions and action was awesome. This is not a movie for people who want to sink their teeth into a conspiracy and have pieces come together, it is a movie for people who want to see blood and explosions. It’s a fun movie to watch and I had a good time watching Mark Wahlberg kill everything in sight. The bad guys in the movie were political people that were no threat to Wahlberg. I would rather see a really cool sniper go head to head against Wahlberg or something. It isn’t a perfect movie by any stretch but one must know what to expect. A cool sniper movie and nothing more.

  3. I have never seen Shooter before, but I thoroughly enjoy action movies and am a fan of Mark Wahlberg, so perhaps one day I'll watch it. I like how you explained the unpredictable ending, and how most movies have those predictable parts and typically movies have happy endings. I think crazy twists in the endings of movies make the movies so much better and it makes you think about the entire story that was told. As for the effects like the explosions, I find the perfect amount of them in a movie makes the difference from it being too lame with just explosions after explosion and that what the movie becomes about whereas with the right amount it takes the effect it’s meant to take.
